The Irish Bank Officials' Association has described the decision by Royal Bank of Scotland to cut over 200 jobs in Belfast and Dublin as a blow for bank workers.

The IBOA has also called on the Government to intervene to try and save some of the technology services positions being lost.

'Since RBS received substantial incentives to set up its operations in Ireland, it is not acceptable that they can just walk away and abandon these highly skilled and committed staff - who have performed to a consistently high level,' IBOA's General Secretary Larry Broderick said in a statement this evening.

In a statement earlier, RBS said the staff, 196 in Dublin and 25 in Belfast, were told their roles were 'no longer required'.

The company said some of the jobs would be transferred to other locations where RBS has 'key back-office hubs'.

RBS said it will offer redundancy terms and, where possible, opportunities for redeployment.
