The country's finance union has backed the Government's proposed toxic assets agency claiming it would protect jobs and boost the economy.

The Irish Bank Officials' Association (IBOA), which has 23,000 members, claimed Nama was the best solution to help repair the beleaguered financial sector.

But the body suggested several additions to the controversial legislation, including tougher regulations and a whistle-blowers' charter to expose wrongdoing. It also backed calls for a public inquiry into the banking crisis to ensure the mistakes of the past are not repeated.
