The IBOA which represents staff in the country's banks has called for the creation of a new forum on banking to oversee the future of the industry.

The new body would be representative of all the stakeholders including customers and staff according to the union's general secretary Larry Broderick.

Mr. Broderick told a union conference in Portlaoise that the future would bring a new landscape for the banking sector which would involve stricter regulation and more transparent governance.

This new culture should be based on a return to the traditional values of prudence, integrity and long term stability according to Mr. Broderick.

The union which represents more than 21,000 workers in the financial services sector in the Republic of Ireland, the North and Britain has said its key priority is the job security of its members.
