A research team from the Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick is conducting research on the perceptions and attitudes of employees in the financial services industry during the current financial crisis. As you are working in the industry at this time, we would like to ask you to complete our survey. Your opinion is very important.

If you haven't already done so, you will need to register on the Members Only section of the website (You'll need your IBOA number to register).

If you are already registered the survey should take no more than fifteen minutes to complete.

A special project is being launched to encourage both current and retired members to identify memorabilia, artefacts and documents in their possession relating to the history of the IBOA.

All material indentified to the project will be returned after being photographed or photocopied for the IBOA archive.

At the same time, we are also looking for volunteers to participate in creating an audio historical archive.

Members with particular reminiscences of the Union - in any of its aspects such as industrial relations issues, sports and social events or "celebrity" members, for example - will be asked to share their memories either in writing or by recording them on video or tape.

A disturbing feature of recent hostage raids has been the willingness of gangs to target families with young children

By Larry Broderick
General Secretary
IBOA The Finance Union

After a relative lull in 2007 and 2008, the incidence of tiger kidnapping has increased dramatically during 2009. A major concern in the most recent spate of incidents has been the use of children as hostages.

While we would all wish it were otherwise, it is likely that the trend will continue during the economic downturn. The major criminal gangs who are being hurt by recent successes by the police authorities in intercepting illegal drugs and contraband are likely to look to other "softer targets." As their actions create the impression that banks are easy marks, there is every possibililty that smaller operators will engage in copy-cat activity - which is likely to put more bank employees at risk.

CSI Customer Service Initiative

The Union's CSi survey reveals that customer service staff are under growing pressure to meet numeric targets rather than address the actual queries and concerns of customers. Most worryingly the survey clearly identifies the priority Banks give to sales rather than service in this area of the business.
